Many users have reported that they experience the following error message while playing with their new 3DS console:

An error has occurred. Hold down the POWER Button to turn off the power, then turn it on and try again.

If the problem persists, please contact your local customer support centre. For contact details, check the Operations Manual or
visit suppport.nintendo.com.

According to GBAtemp,  some users have reported formatting their SD card to FAT32 fixes the issue on their new Nintendo 3DS console. Nintendo's official response is to update the 3DS system to the latest firmware, and to send the unit back if the issue persists.

It is worth pointing out that the above error message also happens to the DSi or DSi XL. The cause of the error on DSi or DSi XL is because the user tries to use the flashcart, such as R4i SDHC,  on the DSi but the flashcart is not compatible with the DSi firmware.
